High Impact Giving: How the Community Itself Decides Where Our Community Dollars Go

"The Federation movement is still the most effective collective consensus-based system of action that the Jewish world and, arguably, the entire philanthropic world has ever known when it comes to addressing needs, initiating new ideas, transforming communities and – yes – saving lives. —Richard Friedman, longest-serving director of a Federation (37 years)

In the world of philanthropic best practices, the way we allocate campaign funds is known as high impact giving. In sum, the processes we have in place allow for the most powerful use of your gift.

Allocating Annual Campaign funds is a fair, democratic, and participatory process. Our diverse, essential group of more than 100 volunteers who spend 650 hours over six months make sure your gift goes to the local programs that most effectively address the most critical needs in our community, and that best support and nurture Jewish life locally, globally, and in Israel. They make sure your gift will be used wisely and with the greatest impact.

In sum, our process works for the greater good.  Our Planning and Allocation volunteers are the epitome of a collaborative, engaged, participatory community.  We are grateful for their energy, skills, and time.

The Federation’s stakes:

Encouraging and engaging community member involvement and participation

Encouraging volunteerism and fostering community pride and ownership

Ensuring agency accountability

Developing community leaders

The volunteers:

1,000-plus hours and a lot of hard work

Assurance of community influence and that everyone’s voice will be heard; not just funding requests but overall needs discussed

CPAs, social workers, educators, lawyers, and others provide expert advice

Identification of areas to enhance and improve

The process:

Is thorough and labor-intensive, democratic

Has careful checks and balances

Entails visits to agencies, meetings with clients, analyzing budgets, reviewing applications

Concludes by forwarding funding recommendations to the Federation Board for approval

The results:

High impact giving: the dollars raised are truly community dollars, properly distributed based on impact and need. It is not the Federation who decides how the dollars are spent, but our community volunteers.

Our Jewish organizations are properly supported, by not looking solely at funding, but at the organization as a whole.

Our volunteers learn and engage with our Jewish organizations, and get involved. Many take on leadership roles with congregations or other Jewish organizations.

Our volunteers get more engaged with the Community Campaign itself, giving more in time and money. More than 90% of the Planning and Allocations volunteers increase their Community Campaign gift.

Our volunteers are in a unique position to see the larger picture, and help with community planning and agency accountability.

These volunteers take ownership and keep the programs aligned with our shared community goals of Cincinnati 2020.
